Laying Grass Rolls: Grass Roll Installation Guide

Laying grass rolls is one of the fastest ways to create a fresh, natural lawn without waiting for seed to establish. Cultivated turf gives you an immediate green surface, but the final result depends on correct preparation, careful handling, prompt installation, and proper aftercare.

Summerhill Lawns supplies fresh turfgrass for homes, landscapers, sports areas, and commercial projects across Dublin and Ireland. As a long-established turf grower and supplier, we understand that successful grass roll installation starts before the turf arrives. The ground must be prepared properly, the turf must be laid without delay, and the new lawn must be watered and maintained correctly during establishment.

Why Proper Grass Roll Installation Matters

Turf is a living product. Each roll contains a mass of grass plants and roots that need close contact with prepared soil to establish properly. If the ground is uneven, compacted, unfertilised, or poorly prepared, the finished lawn may struggle to root and can develop weak or patchy areas.

Good installation also protects the freshness of the turf. Grass rolls are cut to order and should be handled quickly once delivered. Leaving turf rolled up for too long can affect quality, especially during warm, dry, or windy weather.

That is why planning matters. Before your order arrives, the lawn area should already be cleared, levelled, firmed, and ready for installation. This helps the turf go down efficiently and gives the new lawn the best chance of establishing into a healthy surface.

Preparing the Ground Before Laying Grass Rolls

Good roll out lawn preparation is essential before laying grass rolls. Existing lawn, weeds, stones, roots, old turf, and debris should be removed so the new turf can sit directly on prepared soil. If weeds are being treated with a complete weed control product, always follow the product label carefully and allow the correct waiting period before cultivating the ground.

The soil should then be turned over to a depth of approximately 15cm. This can be done by digging over the area by hand or by using a rotavator for larger lawns. Once the ground has been loosened, remove any remaining stones, weeds, clods, or old turf.

After turning the soil, rake the area to create a smooth, even surface. The ground can then be lightly rolled or firmed by foot to reveal soft spots. These areas should be raked level again until the surface is firm, even, and smooth. The ground should be stable enough to walk on, but not so compacted that new roots struggle to establish.

A pre-turfing fertiliser can also be applied before installation. This supports early establishment and gives the turf a better start once it is laid. If the existing ground is poor, thin, or uneven, topsoil or soil conditioner may also be useful before the turf arrives.

Measuring and Ordering Turf Before Installation

Before ordering, measure your proposed lawn area accurately. For square or rectangular areas, multiply the length by the width. For irregular gardens, divide the space into smaller sections and add the total area together. Allow a small extra amount for trimming around borders, curves, paths, beds, and edges.

Summerhill Lawns supplies turf in 1 square yard rolls, which is approximately 0.836 square metres. If you have measured your lawn in square metres, our team can help you work out the correct quantity before delivery.

Because turf is cut to order, it is best to give as much notice as possible when arranging delivery. In general, at least 48 hours’ notice is recommended. Your preparation work should be completed before the turf arrives, as fresh turf should ideally be laid within 12–24 hours of delivery.

When ordering, provide the amount of turf required, your name, delivery address, phone number, and preferred delivery date. If you are unsure how your lawn measurements convert into the correct turf quantity, our roll of turf size information can help you plan the order before delivery.

Step-by-Step Guide to Laying Grass Rolls

Start by laying the first row along the longest straight line in the lawn area. This might be beside a path, patio, driveway, fence, wall, or building edge. A straight first row helps keep the rest of the lawn aligned.

When laying grass rolls, place each roll closely against the next. The edges and ends should be pushed neatly together, but the turf should not be stretched. Stretching can cause gaps to appear later as the turf settles.

Stagger the joints in each row, similar to brickwork. This avoids long continuous seams and helps create a stronger, more natural finish. When you reach the end of a row or an edge, use a sharp knife or half-moon spade to cut the turf cleanly.

Avoid using very small strips at the edges where possible, as these can dry out more quickly and may not establish as well as larger sections. Also, avoid walking directly on newly laid turf. If you need access across the area, place boards down to spread your weight and protect the surface.

The turf should have full contact with the soil underneath. Any air gaps or uneven areas can affect rooting, so make sure each roll sits firmly against the prepared ground.

  • Watering After Grass Roll Installation

Watering is one of the most important steps after grass roll installation. Newly laid turf should be watered within half an hour of installation. Give the turf a thorough soaking and check that the water has passed through the turf and into the soil below. You can gently lift a corner to confirm that the soil underneath is moist.

Watering must continue until the turf has established. Weather conditions will determine how often watering is required. In hot, dry, or windy conditions, watering may be needed several times per day. In cooler conditions, watering may still be needed regularly, but it should be adjusted to avoid waterlogging.

If there are any signs of the turf drying out, water it immediately. New turf can dry quickly during establishment, and a lawn may appear green on the surface while the soil underneath is still too dry.

  • Mowing and Feeding After Laying Grass Rolls

Do not mow your new lawn until the turf has rooted. This can be checked by gently lifting a corner of the turf. If the roots have attached to the soil and the turf resists lifting, it is ready for its first cut.

For the first mow, set the mower to a high setting. It is important not to scalp the lawn during the early mowing stages. Remove only around one-third of the grass height at a time, and mow regularly rather than cutting too aggressively.

Once the lawn is established, the grass height can be reduced gradually to your preferred level. As a general guide, optimum mowing heights are usually between 15mm and 35mm, depending on the turf type, site conditions, and intended use.

If a pre-turfing fertiliser has been used, feeding is usually not required during the first six weeks. After that, suitable lawn feeds can be used as part of ongoing maintenance. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when applying fertiliser.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

One of the most common mistakes is installing turf on poorly prepared ground. Uneven soil, old weeds, stones, compacted areas, and poor levels can all affect the final finish. Another issue is delaying installation after delivery. Fresh turf should not be left rolled up longer than necessary.

Under-watering is also a frequent problem. New turf needs consistent moisture while it roots into the soil. It is not enough to lightly wet the surface; the moisture must reach the soil beneath.

Cutting the lawn too short, too early, can also weaken the turf. New grass needs enough leaf growth to support root development, so early mowing should be careful and controlled.
